The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in December 2019 and lasted until May 2023, drastically reshaped how people, especially children, interacted with the world. With lockdowns and social distancing measures in place, the use of digital devices and online platforms surged, creating an environment where screens became a primary means of entertainment, education, and socialization. Apple’s iPad, which was first released in April 2010, became even more integral to daily life during this time, as it provided a flexible and interactive tool for both schoolwork and entertainment.
Similarly, gaming consoles, which had already been popular for years, saw a sharp increase in usage. The PlayStation (first launched in December 1994) and Xbox (released in November 2001) had well-established reputations by the time the pandemic struck. Their latest versions, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, both launched in November 2020, became huge hits as people sought ways to pass time during the lockdowns. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch, introduced in March 2017, offered a portable and versatile gaming experience that appealed to both casual and serious gamers.
During the pandemic, many children who previously had limits on their screen time were now spending unprecedented hours on devices like the iPad and gaming consoles, playing highly addictive games. Titles such as Fortnite, released in July 2017, and Roblox, originally launched in 2006 but experiencing a boom in popularity during the pandemic, became go-to platforms for kids. These games offered immersive environments and social interaction, providing an escape from the isolation many felt. Minecraft, which debuted in November 2011, also remained popular, encouraging creativity and exploration in a virtual world while real-world interaction was limited.
Games released during the pandemic also saw massive success. Among Us, a multiplayer game centered on teamwork and deception, was released in 2018 but became widely popular in 2020 as people sought light-hearted, social games they could play remotely with friends. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which launched in March 2020, provided a calming, low-stress environment where players could create and manage their own virtual islands, resonating with many looking for a sense of control and comfort during uncertain times.
These devices and games became an integral part of children's daily routines during the pandemic, often filling in the gaps left by the absence of in-person schooling, extracurricular activities, and social events. Medical professionals emphasized that parents shouldn’t stress over screen time but rather focus on reducing overall stress in the household. As a result, many kids became more reliant on screens, leading to what is now recognized as a form of digital addiction. The constant exposure to these platforms triggers dopamine release in the brain, making it more difficult for kids to disengage and return to offline activities, especially when facing real-world stress.
The pandemic, while a unique and challenging time, amplified an ongoing trend of increasing screen use among children. Although life is returning to normal in many places, the habits formed during the pandemic, including excessive screen time, have left lasting effects, with many children continuing to gravitate towards their iPads, Xboxes, PlayStations, and Nintendo Switches as an easy source of dopamine and comfort.
These children are the future of humanity, yet if they remain trapped in a cycle of digital addiction, we face a dire reality. Without the skills to tackle real-life problems, they may struggle to navigate the complexities of adulthood, becoming ill-prepared to face challenges like social injustice, environmental crises, or economic instability. Instead of emerging as innovative thinkers and compassionate leaders, they risk becoming a generation of passive consumers, unable to engage meaningfully with the world around them. If they cannot develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and emotional resilience, humanity's ability to evolve and thrive could be severely compromised, plunging society into a cycle of stagnation and despair.
