What The 20 Most Common Parenting Challenges Reveal

In my last blog entry, I mentioned that I would share how I’m handling my daughter’s screen addiction. Before diving into that, however, I’d like to highlight 20 challenges that parents frequently encounter:

  1. Talking Back: Responding to parents with disrespect or sass.
  2. Arguing: Engaging in unnecessary debates or disputes over small issues.
  3. Being Disrespectful to Siblings: Teasing or bullying brothers or sisters.
  4. Cursing or Using Inappropriate Language: Using foul language they’ve picked up from others.
  5. Disobeying Rules: Ignoring or outright refusing to follow household rules.
  6. Not Cleaning Up: Leaving toys, clothes, and personal items scattered around.
  7. Procrastinating: Delaying homework, chores, or other responsibilities until the last minute.
  8. Not Following Through on Promises: Failing to keep commitments, like helping out or doing chores.
  9. Whining: Complaining in a high-pitched voice about tasks or requests.
  10. Interrupting Conversations: Cutting off adults or siblings while they’re speaking.
  11. Making Excuses: Coming up with reasons for not completing tasks or homework.
  12. Lying: Being dishonest about their actions or whereabouts.
  13. Snooping: Going through parents’ things without permission.
  14. Overusing Screens: Spending excessive time on devices without balance.
  15. Being Ungrateful: Not appreciating gifts, privileges, or efforts made by parents.
  16. Refusing to Share: Hoarding toys or belongings and not allowing others to play.
  17. Throwing Tantrums: Reacting dramatically when they don’t get their way.
  18. Ignoring Personal Hygiene: Refusing to bathe or take care of themselves.
  19. Being Messy at Mealtime: Making a mess while eating without cleaning up afterward.
  20. Not Listening: Ignoring instructions or requests the first time they’re given.

You may have encountered some—or maybe even all—of these challenges. Interestingly, the common thread among them is that the stress we feel in these situations often comes from within, triggered by how we react to our children rather than the behaviors themselves. Most moms feel pressured or reactive when faced with these issues, creating a cycle of stress.

At Happier Mom, you’ll find tools and resources to help you tackle these challenges calmly and confidently. And as we continue to grow, even more resources will become available to support you on this journey. Since I began applying these techniques, I’ve felt significantly more empowered, happier, and fulfilled in my own parenting journey.

In the next article, I'll share the specific steps I took to ease my own stress around my daughter’s screen time.
